Out
of Print illustrates the impetus of new artists to push the
limits of the printmaking medium. It also presents work by
those artists and instructors who encouraged the younger generation
of Alberta print artists to break traditional boundaries and
explore fresh parameters of printmaking.
The
show is presented in two major segments. The main segment
focuses on a new generation of print artists whose work challenges
the traditional notion of printmaking and established uses
of the multiple process. This segment of the show sets out
a ground for the artistic debate between young print artists
from Calgary and Edmonton: Mike Bowman, Marna Bunnell,
Marjan Eggermont, Doug Fink, Brad Harms, Ducan MacKenzie,
Jeremy Mayne, Maria Anna Parolin, Mark Siegner, Tadeusz Warszynski
and Angus Wyatt.
Works
include mixed media that incorporate some aspect of printmaking,
images that have been digitally created or altered, prints
that are one of a kind, editioned prints, and prints that
have not been printed, or prints that have been executed on
material other than paper. Examples of techniques used include
etched steel plates, collograph prints over steel light boxes,
monoprints on plexiglass, collage prints and offset lithographs.
The
adjunct segment features works by senior Alberta print artists
who have influenced the new generation of print artists. Artists
including J.K. Esier, Liz Ingram, Walter Jule, Bill Laing,
Margaret May, Lyndal Osborne, Noburu Sawai,
Ken Webb and John Will have been selected to honour
their contributions in establishing new aesthetic foundations,
and to elevating Alberta printmaking to international prominence.
