A CELEBRATION OF CHILDREN'S ART
The artwork in this exhibition was created by children (age 4 -
16) enrolled during the past year in art programmes at North Mount
Pleasant and Wildflower Arts Centres.
The Arts
Centres, operated through the Arts & Culture Division of The
City of Calgary Parks & Recreation, employ artists from within
our community to teach a wide variety of programmes, designed to
stimulate, nurture, and develop children's creativity.
The
History
This
is the 14th year the Arts Centres have presented a children's art
exhibit. The show has been held at various locations: the Mayor's
Office, Municipal Atrium, Gulf Gallery, and Devonian Garden Art
Gallery. In 1995, the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts has been selected
as an official host for the children's art exhibit.
For the
past 8 years, this exhibition has been unofficially refereed to
as the "Mayor's Art Show". Mayor Al Duerr has been very
supportive of this exhibition, and has generously given a good deal
of his time to attend the opening receptions, and recognize the
achievements of these young artists.
Why
Children's Art Exhibit ?
An
exhibition of this kind provides an excellent opportunity to create
bond between the arts community and community at large. In addition
to that, this particular exhibit:
- Allows
children to connect with, and feel a sense of belonging to their
community;
- Serves
to promote and celebrate children's creativity and their artistic
achievements;
- Serves
as a special art venue during the Calgary International Children's
Festival;
- Helps
to build audiences for the arts;
- Presents
both Arts Centres and the Triangle Gallery as vital stimulants
to various inter-community activities;
- Also
helps to inject more colour, life, scent, spirit, humour, and
unselfconscious whimsy into May/June arts scene.
