The
exhibition features the work by 10 relatively young but nationally
and internationally reputed designers/design firms from across Canada:
Pure Design Studio (Edmonton), Hothouse Design Studio (Edmonton),
Plastic Buddha Inc. (Winnipeg), Speke Klein (Rockwood, Ont.), Scot
Laughton (Toronto), Patty Johnson (Toronto), Kerr & Company Inc.
(Toronto), Michael Santella (Montreal), Diane Bisson (Montreal),
and Karim Rashid Inc. (currently in New York).
Of
particular interest are examples of furniture, lighting and house
wares. Objects have been selected to represent a wide variety of
media currently being explored. Not only executed with high quality
and effective design, the forms are conceptually provocative, visually
innovative, diverse and witty.
The
contributors to this catalogue and the organizers of the exhibition
consider the historical context of Canadian design, assess its merits,
and approach distinction between art, craft, design, and style.

Habitat:
Canadian Design Now
Circulated
by the Winnipeg Art Gallery and presented in Calgary in conjunction
with the 15th Anniversary of the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts
and the 20th Anniversary of Artwalk Festival
Habitat:
Canadian Design Now is a timely exhibition surveying selected elements
of Canadian contemporary design for domestic environments. One of
the aims of this presentation is to bring public awareness to current
trends in contemporary Canadian design, not to mention recognition
of some of the individuals responsible for these timely and valuable
innovations.

Of particular
interest are examples of furniture, lighting and house wares. Objects
have been selected to represent a wide variety of media currently
being explored. Not only executed with high quality and effective
design, the forms are conceptually provocative, visually innovative,
diverse and witty. Relatively new materials, such as plastics and
resins are being exploited to demonstrate a maximum result of experimentation
and execution, while traditional materials, such as wood or steel,
continued to be further explored. Colour is exploding, and forms
range from organic, minimal, sensual, fluid and sleek, reflecting
the rapid advancement of technological process.
A 100-pages
richly illustrated catalogue with the scholarly-researched essays
by Helen Delacretaz (Associate Curator of Decorative Arts at the
Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Habitat curator), Rachel Gottlieb (a
historian of contemporary design and a former Curator of the Design
Exchange in Toronto) , and Kelly Rude (Toronto design critic) accompanies
this exhibition. The contributors to this catalogue and the organizers
of the exhibition consider the historical context of Canadian design,
assess its merits, and approach distinction between art, craft,
design, and style. By presenting design from a curatorial point
of view rather than from a trade show perspective, Habitat: Canadian
Design Now promises to engage everyone who is interested in the
object of daily life. In this regard, the exhibition will enhance
audience understanding and appreciation of new trends in Canadian
contemporary design, maintaining and enriching Canadian design heritage
and contribution of the "new wave" of Canadian designers to the
global visual culture.
